Science behind the Olympics??

What do you remember from Science class?

What do you think of when you hear Science?

I came across this quote about Science the other day and wanted to highlight it, underline it, draw a circle around it, and put a star in the margin:

Science teaches children more than the basic laws of gravity and the different type of species. It capitalizes on their natural curiosity. It teaches them to think clearly and to make arguments based on evidence and sound reasoning. It expands their vocabulary and enhances valuable reading and math skills, including the ability to understand charts, graphs, and data.

~from Mission Possible by Moskowitz and Lavinia

I bet you can guess which words and topics in that statement really jumped out at me ....

I must admit the Science was not exactly my favorite subject when I was in school, but I have recently been intrigued by the wide collection of resources I have found related to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math! (My daughter is very interested in Science and even wanted to go to the NC Museum of Natural Sciences for her birthday so I am trying to be a good role model and not discourage her curiosity and interest ...)

Tonight I looked back through the things I have shared on my blog and found some great Science resources and even got inspired by one post to look for something new ....

But there was one that I found that inspired me to look for another one .... that is tied to something that is happening right now!!!

I am a big fan of the Olympics ... (I have been resisting the urge to write about resources for the Olympics for months, but now that the Olympics are happening, I consider it time .... I even wrote about Team Handball at the Olympics the other day).

When I searched for the word Science on my blog, I found a blog post about resources related to the 2010 Winter Olympics.

That got me wondering if there might be resources from the same places (NBC Learn and the National Science Foundation) for the 2012 Summer Olympics ....

Here is what I found:

NBC Learn and NBC Sports, in partnership with the National Science Foundation, explore the engineering and technology helping athletes maximize their performance at the 2012 London Games.

Yay!!! I am excited to point out videos that show and help explain the Science behind the Summer Olympics!

There is even a video highlighting Missy Franklin and Fluid Dynamics .... she has done well in the Olympics so far!

Go explore and share what you liked the most!

Do you have favorite Science resources for me to explore?
